HOW DO THE BIG TOURNAMENTS DO IT?

There are more than 1 million golf outings and tournaments in the U.S. annually. The average event has 80 players and raises $5,000. Have you ever wondered how the big events raise $100,000 or more?

We surveyed coordinators from many of the big events. There are certain ingredients that seem to come up with the big ones. Let's take a look at how these events raise large amounts of money. You, too, can emulate their success and reach big numbers for your tournament!
Consider trying a few of these ideas for your next golf tournament:
*Well-Connected Committee Members - Your tournament starts with a committee. The key to your success is with your committee. Committee Members assist on bringing everything together, such as; a deal on the golf course, big sponsors, other golfers, prizes, and big auction items. Your committee should be comprised of people who are well-connected in the community -- the movers and the shakers and individuals that know people are ideal.
Make sure that you have enough committee members. Put one individual in charge of each area of responsibility; Sponsors, Golfers, Gifts/Prizes, Operations, PR and Auctions. Once you have the right team together you must train them properly, hold them accountable, and then reward them for their efforts. Obviously, the better the committee, the better your tournament...pure and simple!
*Unique Money-Making Formats - Scrambles do not make the most money. If you want to double, or triple, your goal, consider using a different format. There are many formats that generate more money.
     1) Pro-Ams - By putting a local golf pro with each foursome  you can charge triple to play in your event.
     2) Celeb-Ams - By putting a local celebrity in each foursome you can also raise the registration fees. Celebrities are anyone famous within your community that others want to play with; athletes, politicians, local television or radio personalities, etc.
*Golf-A-Thons --  Find 40 golfers to raise pledges per hole. Golfers play 100 holes of golf in one day. You can raise $50,000 to $150,000 in one day.
*Great Golf Course - Private country clubs are the ideal place to host an event. You can charge higher amounts with the perceived value. Golfers want to play a course that they do not normally get to play. They will pay you more if you give them more.
*High Income Golfers - You will sell larger sponsors with a high demographics of golfers. Golfers that sponsors want to reach are doctors, lawyers and high income earners. Sponsors will pay big money to reach these people. How do you get these high demographics golfers you ask? It gets back to the committee and the ideal committee members know this! If you host a first class event and they are asked by the right people, they will join you.
*Big Sponsors - All companies want one thing -- More business! Turn your event into a marketing tool for the businesses. Companies will pay you more if you give them more. They all want a return on investment. Develop sponsor packages that give your sponsors new business.Remember, golfers like to have the option to buy things.Your sponsor packages should give your sponsors a way to reach them and sell them. For example: send golfers to the sponsors to sign up for your event at a discount and run ads for sponsors on web site, newsletter, blast e-mails etc.
*Huge Auctions - Auctions are what turn regular events into huge events. The bigger the items the more money you will make. Don't settle for just gift baskets. Give the golfers something worth buying, such as: trips, celebrity memorabilia, appliances, etc. Golfers will pay you more if you give them more. Start your auction well in advance of your tournament by promoting it on your website and  through e-mail blasts. Plan big and you will hit big.
*Strategic Partnerships - Smaller groups should consider partnering up with for-profit corporations; United Way partners with Publix Supermarkets. United Way handles all of the details and Publix brings in all of the major sponsors. Vendors mean big money. For-profit corporations are looking for charities to partner with and support.

Don't be afraid to go knocking on doors. Look for a big company that wants to support you.
